Washing your wig is a very important step of taking care of your investment.  It is not that hard to do and can be done simply and easily by following a few steps.

Step 1

Remove the wig.

Step 2

Brush the wig gently with a wig brush, getting rid of all tangles.

Step 3

Fill a sink with cold water.

Step 4

Add a capful (about 1 tbsp.) of wig shampoo.

Step 5

Place the wig in soapy water and swish it around with your fingers for a minute or two.

Step 6

Use a soft toothbrush to remove any makeup stains. Use a paste of baking soda and shampoo on stubborn makeup stains.

Step 7

Let the wig soak in the sink for about five minutes.

Step 8

Drain the soapy water out and refill the sink with clean, cool water.

Step 9

Rinse the wig until all the shampoo is removed. You may have to change the water a few times.

Step 10

Gently blot the excess water with a dry towel. Do not wring the wig out.

Step 11

Let the wig air-dry on a wig stand, or turn it inside out and lay flat to dry.

Step 12

Spray on a wig conditioner and style your wig after it has dried.

  • Patients requiring a cranial prosthesis may be eligible for reimbursement under their health insurance plan?
  • Doctors should prescribe a cranial prosthesis (not a “wig”), thus aiding a patient’s insurance claim process?
  • Most insurance companies cover between 80 to 100 percent of a cranial prosthesis prescription?
  • Patients may be reimbursed from their insurance companies for expenses related to the fitting and care of a cranial prosthesis as long as the stylist bills for such (and not a “wig”)?

Patients should check with their insurance company for details of their coverage regarding cranial prostheses?
