Owner, Gail Minor

Cancer runs in my family like water from a faucet,” said Gail Minor, owner of Gallery of Weaves and Wigs.

After her sister and several other relatives faced the throes of cancer, Minor decided to bring her 25 years of management and customer service experience to bear when she opened her Quioccasin Road boutique almost five years ago.

“Enduring chemotherapy is stressful enough, but losing one’s hair? It’s like adding insult to injury,” she said. “I wanted to do something to put smiles on the faces of those going through chemotherapy,” said Minor, who believes a person’s appearance is vital to their self-esteem.

Minor researched for almost two years the causes of hair loss and, particularly, its cosmetic remedies.

Whether one’s hair loss results from chemotherapy, alopecia, trichotillomania, cranial surgery, burns, abrasions, pattern baldness or thinning hair, Minor urges such patients to “avoid the average wig. I’ve done the research, and I’m confident I offer the finest cranial prostheses anywhere,” she said.

Explaining the difference between an average wig and a cranial prosthesis, Minor told MD News that most wigs do not offer the natural look of a custom-crafted and fitted cranial prosthesis, but are mass-produced as mere beauty aids. A cranial prosthesis, however, is made from a mold of the recipient’s head.

“The cap construction is the vital difference,” Minor said, adding that a cranial prosthesis is constructed of French lace and other hypoallergenic materials.

“The appearance of the average wig almost always employs a style that requires bangs,” she said, noting that such wigs attempt to hide their falsity but actually accentuate it.

“The way top quality cranial prostheses are made allows a woman to wear her hair in whatever way she wants — a pony tail, or even an high, upsweep style,” Minor said. “Also, many cranial prostheses are made from human hair and look very natural.”

Minor suggests that prospective patients — women, children and men — visit her boutique before medical treatment or while in the initial stages of hair loss so she can match hair color and style. She said a picture works well as a second option, but a more timely consultation is ideal.

Citing the Virginia Cancer Society and McGuire VA Medical Center, Minor noted other such entities she works with to assist those with hair loss needs, adding that she has brochures for her services in many medical offices across the Richmond/Chesterfield County area.

“I’m not trying to be the biggest vendor of these products; I’m just trying to be the best,” she said. “That’s why we provide sensitive, discreet and compassionate service in a boutique setting for those who want to maintain an ongoing, natural look. Regardless of the cause, I believe the Gallery of Weaves and Wigs team has the products and expertise to meet anyone’s needs beautifully.”

Minor welcomes inquiries about her products and services. Contact Gail for more information.  She invites personal visits to her 9020 Quioccasin Road  boutique located in Suite F, or phone calls at 804.754.1262 .
